Robin's Story - Caring for my wife with Alzheimer's

"My wife Clara was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease three years ago. At first, she was just a bit forgetful, but as time went on, she lost more and more of her memory and her independence. She still recognizes me, but has trouble with people she doesn't see every day.

We have had our rough spots—it was hard for me to understand when she forgot I was her husband—she thought we were still dating! I always used to correct her, but then I started going along with it, and talked about all the things we used to do when we were young. She seemed to relax and enjoy herself, and not get so agitated.

Also, I have a trained nursing assistant come into the house several times a week to sit with Clara, so I can go shopping and catch my breath. It's not easy, but I know my Clara would do the same for me."
