Bob's Story
Recognizing Depression and Seeking Treatment
"I retired last year. Boy, was I ever looking forward to that! No more getting up early, no more long commutes. I was shocked when I started having trouble concentrating, even making decisions. I was tired all the time and just lacked energy. It got so that my wife didn't even want to be around me. She's the one who finally dragged me to the doctor.
The doc said I was depressed. I said he must be mistaken. I told him, "I'm not one of those guys who's always down-in-the-dumps! It must be something else." When he told me the facts, I had to agree. I had a case of depression.
So, I made a couple of changesÑI started talking to a counselor and taking the medication that my doc prescribed. As I started to feel a bit better, I got a hobby and started walking with my wife each night for exercise. Now retirement is just what I hoped it would beÑenjoyable!"
