The Basics

It's a sad fact, but many older adults are at risk for suicide. In fact, more than 20% of people who commit suicide are over age 65.

Although most people who consider suicide are depressed, most people who are depressed are not suicidal.

People can become depressed because of an imbalance of brain chemicals and because of stresses like the loss of a spouse, illness, or disability.

Suicide can be prevented. Whether you have thought about suicide or you know someone who has, it's important to know the warning signs, take those signs seriously, and take action. The problems that sometimes lead to suicide can often be solved.
