Warning Signs

The four warning signs of suicide are:

  • 1) Previous suicide attempts. Half of all people who commit suicide have attempted suicide before.
  • 2) Talking about death or suicide. A person who is suicidal may talk about death or say things like "everyone would be better off without me."
  • 3) Planning for suicide. Some people who are thinking about suicide put their affairs in order. They may give away prized possessions, pay off debt, and make changes to a will.
  • 4) Depression. People who commit suicide are usually suffering from depression. Depression is an illness that can worsen because of a loss, retirement, or an illness.

A person with five or more of the following symptoms may be suffering from depression that is serious enough to lead to suicide:

  • Sad mood
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Increased or decreased appetite
  • Change in sleeping pattern
  • Loss of energy, tiredness
  • Loss of interest in usual activities
  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt
  • Difficulty concentrating and thinking clearly
  • Focus on death and the desire to be dead
