Have you felt very anxious or worried more times than not over the past few months? You may have generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD.

Choose the answers that best describe how you feel. Add up your score at the end of each section.

Section A

1) Do you worry most of the time (spend more time worrying than not worrying)?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

2) Has your anxiety lasted more than six months?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

3) Can you control your worry?
Score 0 points for yes, 1 point for no.

  • If your total is 1 or more, move onto the next section.
  • If your total is 0, you most likely do not have Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Section B

On most days, do you:

1) Feel restless or "on edge"?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

2) Tire easily?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

3) Have difficulty concentrating?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

4) Become irritated very easily?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

5) Feel muscle tension?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

6) Have trouble falling or staying asleep?
Score 1 point for yes, 0 points for no.

  • If your total for section B is 3 or more, move onto the next section.

Section C

1) Are you taking a drug that can cause anxiety?
Score 0 points for yes, 1 point for no.

2) Do you have a medical condition that can cause anxiety?
Score 0 points for yes, 1 point for no.

  • If your total for section C is 1 or more, you are probably suffering from GAD. Take steps now so that you can feel better soon. Call your doctor or make an appointment with a provider who can diagnose and treat anxiety.
  • If your total for section C is 0, you may be suffering from anxiety caused by a medical condition or medication. You don't need to suffer! Talk to your doctor about your anxiety. Together you can find a solution.
