No More Excuses
Roberto: I'm too old to start exercising.
You're never too old. People in their eighties can still improve their strength by lifting weights and climbing stairs.
You don't have to hop on a skateboard or take up rollerblading like some of the younger folks. Taking a walk with your grandkids, gardening, or slow dancing all count as great physical activities.
Jane: I have terrible arthritis. How can I be more active if I have trouble moving around?
Some senior centers offer special programs for people with arthritis who want to stay active. Explore the Arthritis Foundation web site. The Arthritis Foundation also provides booklets to read, and you can buy a video of the PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) program that you can do at home to get started.
If you are interested in water-based exercise, you can find programs in your area by clicking here.
Harley: I can't afford to join a health club.
Why not make your home and neighborhood your health club? Walk, jog, and take the stairs. Use soup cans as weights. Pull weeds or push a vacuum cleaner with an extra bit of push.
Also, many programs for older adults at senior centers and the YMCA cost very little. Sometimes they're free!
José: I don't have time to exercise because I spend a lot of my day taking a bus to work and back.
You might try taking a small two-pound weight on the bus with you. While you're sitting in traffic on the bus, you can do bicep curls, one arm at a time. Set a goal for yourself each day. As this exercise gets easier, you can gradually increase the number of curls that you do. Also, try walking to a bus stop that is a bit farther away.
Ruth: I really don't feel like getting out much these days, let alone working out. Besides, I feel so tired and low a lot of the time.
First, talk to your doctor. Be sure to mention that you are feeling tired and blue. Depression may be the cause. If you lack energy and feel down in the dumps, exercise can actually give you more zip. It's also great for lifting your spirits.
