Fat Facts

Some people say that fat is unhealthy. Others say that some fat is okay. Who is right? Both are. The truth is: not all fats are created equal. Here's a primer:

Saturated fats found in meat fat, poultry skins, coconut oil, butter, lard, and many dairy products are not good for you. These fats tend to raise blood cholesterol. High levels of blood cholesterol have been linked to heart disease. Choose foods that have unsaturated fats instead. Unsaturated fats come in "mono" and "poly" forms.

Monounsaturated fats are the best kind for your body. These fats are found in avocados, olive oil, and canola oil.

Polyunsaturated fats also are "good" fats because they tend to lower blood cholesterol. These fats are found in corn, sunflower, safflower, sesame, cottonseed, and soybean oil. Vegetable oil and peanut oil also contain polyunsaturated fats.
