Help Around the House

Kitchen

• Check to make sure that electrical appliances are not near the stove or sink.
• For those who have trouble with meals:

• Chinese soup spoons can make spilling less of a problem.
• Use a small food processor or chopper to break food into smaller pieces.
• Use plastic drink boxes with a pop-up top. They may be easier than a cup with a straw for some people.

Bedroom

• Place a pitcher and glass or a cooler with drinks beside your loved one's bed.
• Consider turning a room that is on the first floor of your home into a bedroom.
• Make sure the bedroom has nightlights.
• Place a telephone and a light within easy reach of the bed.
• Closet
• Attach Velcro fasteners to clothing and shoes. These fasteners are easier to use than buttons, snaps, and zippers.
• Lower the clothes rod so that your loved one doesn't have to reach up for clothes.

Bathroom

• Attach foam curlers to the handles of your loved one's toothbrush, razor, brush, and comb. They will make these items easier to grasp.
• Place grab bars in the bath or shower area.
• A high toilet seat is easier for some people to use.
• Check to see that faucets are easy to turn off and on.

Stairs

• Check the handrails. They shouldn't wobble.
• Make sure that the stairway is well lit.
• Put brightly colored tape at the edge of each step.

All Through the House

• Set up a baby monitor so that you'll be able to hear your loved one when you're in another part of the house.
• Make sure that the temperature on your water heater is low enough that your loved one can't get burned while bathing.
• Attach throw rugs to the floor with double-sided tape.

Outside

• Check the lights and your house number. Is your house well lit outside? Is your house or apartment number easy to read?
• Make sure that railings near steps are sturdy.
• Take steps to make sure your walkway is smooth.
