New Ways to Think about Getting Around
For most of us, being able to drive is closely linked to being able to do a lot of other things that we enjoy. If we have to stop driving, how can we still stay active and do the things outside of our homes that we like to do?
In addition to taking the bus, subway, or taxi, here are some other ways to stay mobile.
To get to:
The senior center: Does your town have a van to transport older adults to the senior center? Call town hall or your local council on aging to find out.
The grocery store: Share a cab with a friend or neighbor. Ask if the taxi service offers lower fares for seniors. Or, see if your local grocery store makes deliveries.
The doctor's office: Call your local agency on aging. Some offer rides to medical appointments.
A place of worship: Ask your minister or rabbi if someone in your congregation could drive you to religious services.
The library: Plan a "library and lunch" day with a friend who still drives. He or she could drive you both to the library; then you could treat him or her to lunch.
