Is It Grief or Is It Depression?
It's hard to lose a loved one. Every day brings some sadness when you miss that person who has been so important to you.
Feeling the sadness of grief is normal. One thing that many people don't realize, though, is that grief can lead to depression. In fact, 1 in 5 people who have lost a loved one also struggles with depression one year after the death.
Depression can make your unhappiness even worse by separating you from your other loved ones. It can also make you more uncomfortable because of other health problems. It can steal your ability to think clearly.
If you're not sure whether your sadness is because of grief or depression, ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do I feel sad?
2. Have I lost interest in things that used to bring me pleasure?
3. Am I eating more or less than I used to?
4. Am I sleeping too much or too little?
5. Do I feel worried?
6. Do I feel worn out?
7. Do I have trouble thinking clearly?
8. Do I feel bad about myself?
9. Do I ever think about suicide?
10. Have I lost interest in sex?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, talk with your doctor. It may be more than grief. He or she can help you begin to heal your mind and heart.
