Get Ready for Anniversaries of the Heart
After someone you love has died, holidays can be even harder to get through than other days. Your loved one's birthday and the anniversary of his or her death may also be painful for you.
Here are some ways to prepare for these trying times:
• Allow yourself to remember past holidays with your loved one. Talk about him with your family and friends.
• Be good to yourself. Give yourself a gift. Take the day off from your usual routine and do something that you enjoy.
• Create new traditions that celebrate your loved one: her favorite song sung at holiday time, a special dinner on his birthday.
• Reach out to others. Invite a friend over for dinner.
• Volunteer your time in a community service organization or a fundraiser that was important to your loved one. Giving to others can bring unexpected comfort.
