How I Remember: Meredith's Story

I lost Scott to leukemia 7 years ago. Watching him fight the disease was one of the hardest things I've ever been through. He was my companion for 47 years and I still miss him every day.

I wanted to keep his memory alive, and I guess a part of me wanted to make him proud. My sister suggested that I volunteer with a leukemia organization, you know, to help honor Scott's memory. I've heard of walk-a-thons and marathons to help raise money, but I've been in a wheelchair since I fractured my hip 6 years ago. It turned out that I was not alone--I live near a big city and there are plenty of other folks in wheelchairs who have lost someone to leukemia. We organized a wheel-a-thon at a local high school track. I made 3 laps with some pushing help from my grandniece, Becky.

It was a small affair. We had 15 "wheelers" and 22 walkers, but we made almost $600! Next year, the wheel-a-thon falls a week before Scott's birthday. He would have been 77. I'll be thinking of him and I'm sure he will be watching me.
