Marge's Story - When I Had to Stop Driving

"Last year I had a mild stroke when I was driving with my husband to the grocery store. I passed out and crashed into a guardrail. Luckily, Tom and I weren't badly hurt and I'm thankful that I hit the guardrail instead of another car. My doctor said I would have to stop driving because next time we might not be so lucky.

I understood why I had to stop driving, but I felt like I was giving up so much of my freedom with my car keys. Tom hasn't been able to drive since his diabetes made his eyesight so poor. I'm 79 years old and I'd been driving for over 50 years. Until last year, I'd never had an accident. Adjusting to life without driving has been hard, but now I know that it's not the end of the world. I've found some ways to stay independent and get around."
