How We Did It

We asked some of our readers how they made retirement a positive time in their lives. Here are some of their responses:

"I started working as a volunteer reader in an elementary school close to where I live. The teachers were looking for "guest grandparents" and I've really enjoyed it. I never had time to do things like that when my own children were young."
Mike Wong, Saratoga, FL

"Every Tuesday and Thursday I drive a woman from my church into Boston for her medical appointments. She's become a good friend. It feels good to help someone else, and being with her makes me appreciate how fortunate I am to have my health."
Marjorie Smith, Malden, MA

"I signed on with the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). Small businesses and community groups sometimes call on me for advice about management. It helps me to use what I've learned in all my years in business. I enjoy staying connected with the community."
Richard Brigham, Endicott, NY

"The nice thing about being retired is that lots of places offer discounts to retired seniors! I received a tuition discount at the community college and I'm studying landscape gardening."
Anna Lopez, Brownsville, TX
