Claire's Story - Travel on a Shoestring
"I am a single lady in my eighties. Believe it or not, I feel like I am having the time of my life. I get to go new places and met new people all of the time. I have always liked to try new things, but sometimes that is hard for someone like me who has to live on a limited income. After my divorce over twenty years ago, I managed to stay busy with my friends and my grandchildren. But, over the past few years, my social life quieted down quite a bit - many of my friends moved in with family or into nursing homes, and my grandchildren grew up.
I wanted to stay active and stay around people, because that's what kept me feeling up. I was volunteering at my local cultural center - and I got to talking with one of the other volunteers. We found out that we both are interested in travel- there are a lot of historical sites and museums within a days drive from here, but neither of us could drive anymore. We decided to test the waters, to see if anyone else was interested in the same thing we were. We hung up some sign up sheets around the center to see if we would get a bite.
Needless to say, there were a lot of others interested. We got a group of about twenty people together. The local council on aging offered us the use of their van and their driver for a small fee, and we started taking day trips all over the place. Next week we are going to visit Fort Ticonderoga. Now I get to travel with friends for just a few dollars!"
