La Clinica del Pueblo demonstrates excellence in cultural competency and sustainability. Founded in 1983 to address the needs of Central American refugees arriving in the Washington, DC, area, La Clinica del Pueblo began as a one-room health clinic with a single doctor, operating one night per week. Since then, it has grown exponentially in staff, the range of services it provides, and the clients it serves. This non-profit health clinic provides free health care, mental health care, and social services to immigrant Latinos and others in need.
Clients who walk into La Clinica del Pueblo feel at home. They are surrounded by people who respect their culture and traditions and who listen and understand their language, values, beliefs, and concerns. Phones are answered in Spanish and signs are written in both English and Spanish. A small chapel within the clinic is a reassuring place for many clients.
Working closely with their affiliated agency, Educational Organization of United Latin Americans (EOFULA), La Clinica del Pueblo provides outreach, education, counseling, case management, health screening, social activities, transportation, and translation services to older Latino adults in the area. EOFULA also provides congregate meals. Together these organizations work hard to ensure culturally competent patient care and staff development. La Clinica del Pueblo is paving the way to augment access to mental health and other services for Latino elders by creating an integrated model of care for the Latino elderly.
